A little behind-the-scenes is always fun, and if a small, but valuable lesson is included, that’s a bonus!

Last week, I featured Lisa and Zac’s engagement session on here. At the session, I just happened to photograph one behind-the-scenes shot. Today, I thought I would use that image to share what I have learned about capturing a variety of images in a limited amount of space and time.

For part of their session, Lisa and Zac wanted to be photographed on a fishing dock. A few days before the session, I scouted out a great location with 3 or 4 docks. When it came time for us to go to this area, we found all of the docks occupied by a large number of lake lovers. Thankfully, one man was more than happy to share his dock with us. While I was getting Lisa and Zac in place, I quickly captured this image which I find kind of humorous…

We obviously did not have a bad backdrop to work with. However, by the time we got to the dock, we had a very limited amount of daylight left. Instead of wasting time walking around to different spots, I chose to stay at the dock for the remainder of the session. Even though we stayed in one spot and I needed to keep the other man out of the pictures, I was able to capture a variety of creative and beautiful images which you can see > here <.

Okay, so you want to know the secret to capturing a variety of images in a limited amount of space and time..? MOVING. It’s that simple, and yet, I feel like I have to relearn this at every session. Sometimes I get stuck and I forget that both me and my subjects can move. Have your subjects look at you, then look away, then look at each other. Have them stand, then sit, then lean on something. Move the angle at which you are shooting. Shoot straight on, then at a 45 degree angle, then close up to your subject, then far away (if possible). See how many options there are?!

So next time you are at a session and you feel stuck, just remember to MOVE! I will definitely be reminding myself of this also : )

Today is the day! The new blog design is here! I have been anxiously waiting to share this with all of you. Last December, I contacted Tiffany Kelley of Tiffany Kelley Design to re-design my blog. I shared my vision and ideas with her, and she completely brought my dreams to life. I’m so happy with the final results and feel like this blog now truly reflects my style and personality.

So take a look around! Soak in all of the fun details, and let me know what you think! And because every blog post is much better with a picture.. Here’s a little something from Lucas and Lauren’s engagement session in Oklahoma City. Their gorgeous faces will be filling up my new blog soon!

I’ll be honest… I’ve been dragging a little. While this time of year has been unusually warm, I still haven’t done much shooting. January and February are the months where photographers revamp, rearrange, reorganize, and refocus for the new year. I have been working on new goals, a new blog, updating marketing materials, and so on.. But a couple of days ago, I realized I needed to get out of the office and stretch my photography muscles. I would compare photography to basketball or any other sport. You still have to work out and practice in the off season. If you don’t, than you will be very rusty and out of shape when the action starts up again. You like my analogy?!

So a couple of days ago, I grabbed my camera and walked right outside my house. Stretching both my physical and photographic muscles felt good. Here are a few images I shot. Nothing extravagant or extra special, but every bit of practice counts. The post processing was influenced by the greenery and overcast feel of the day.

Every once in a while, for one reason or another, someone asks me what kind of camera they should buy for them self or their significant other. Since Christmas is right around the corner, the inquiries have picked up (I won’t give names because I don’t want to give away the surprise for some unsuspecting spouses!), so I thought I would write a little blog post about a couple of good cameras one could buy for Christmas!

Canon Rebel Series
With the advances in technology, DSLR cameras have become much more affordable and very popular outside of the professional photographer world. Canon produces a series of entry-level DSLR cameras called the “Rebel” series. These cameras are great for someone who is interested in professional photography or the regular consumer who just wants a DSLR. My first DSLR was a Canon Rebel xsi, and it was a great starter camera when I began pursuing photography.

Sony Alpha NEX Series
Now this is a cool camera. My aunt got this camera last year and I have wanted it ever since. The camera body is small and compact like a point and shoot camera, but here’s the cool part.. it can change lenses! The image and video quality is amazing and according to Sony, the quality is on par with DSLR cameras. So if you want a great camera, but would rather avoid a big, bulky DSLR, you should definitely check this camera out!

I hope this blog post was helpful! Keep in mind, there are many different cameras on the market, and these are just a couple of options in which I’ve had personal experience. Today’s technology is so great, you really can’t go wrong in finding a great camera!

The wedding industry is overflowing with amazing vendors. Even though I’m self employed and mainly work on my own, I cannot do what I do without the other professionals who use their talents to better this industry. If you are in the wedding industry or trying to get into the wedding industry, I highly recommend reaching out and connecting with other vendors. These are just a few who have been a big influence to me and many others…

Justin Metcalfe – Justin is the owner of Your Wedding Video Sucks. He is by far one of the most talented wedding videographers I’ve seen and no one could come up with a more clever business name! Justin documented mine and Eric’s wedding day and I will most definitely share our video as soon as we get it! If you are looking for someone to document your wedding in a completely nontraditional way, Justin is THE MAN!

Josh McCullock – Well I just worship Josh’s work. He absolutely rocks at what he does, and I was blessed to have him as my wedding photographer. His work has a feeling of being natural and real, and my favorite thing about him: He wears awesome bow ties!

David Parks – David is proof that age doesn’t matter. He’s 19 years old and has talent that many seasoned professional photographers would die for. Plus he’s the sweetest kid on earth! Keep up with him on his Facebook page because he’s going to be HUUUGE in this industry!

Esther Nail – I saved the best for last (sorry, boys)! I could probably write a novel on how great Esther is. Everyone loves Esther because of her humility. She has the sweetest heart and has no clue how great of a photographer she is! Actually, she’s probably blushing right now as she reads this. If you’re ever at a wedding and see two brunette photographers burning up the dance floor, it’s most likely me and Esther. Our secret is out!

I had the privilege of photographing Shayna and Ryan’s wedding this past Saturday at Camp Loughridge in Tulsa, Oklahoma. I just have to share this special moment from their wedding. Shayna and Ryan chose to do the “First Look” before the ceremony and gosh, what a moment!

Many brides and grooms are now opting to see each other before the ceremony and it is something I highly recommend. I will soon write a post about the positives and negatives of the First Look for both the bride and groom, and the wedding photographer.

Stay tuned.. : )

“How do you think of such creative things” my bride, Morgan, asked me while I was shooting details of her wedding.
That question was actually a big compliment for me. I tend to be a logical thinker and creativity can be a struggle at times. In order to be creative, I have to throw out the logical and just let my mind run free.

If you are a photographer or aspiring photographer, maybe showing you how I come up with detail shots will help you get your creative juices flowing. I’m not claiming to be the best at this or that my way is the correct way of doing things, but I hope that I can help at least one person who may feel stuck in the creative department just like I have been so many times!

So here are a few examples from Morgan’s wedding at the Sand Plum Event Center. The venue is filled with natural lit rooms and a lot of beautiful objects so I had a variety of things to use. This is where I throw logic out the door – I like to place the details (ie dress, rings, shoes etc) where they may not usually belong.

The dress: I saw this large painting on the soft blue wall so I decided to hang the dress on the frame. The painting was just high enough that the dress did not hit the ground and I got the resulting photographs.
( Shot with 24-70mm, f2.8, 1/125, 2500 ISO)

The rings: this old checkers board was sitting on a desk so I moved it near some natural light and placed the rings on the middle of the board. I moved the rings around for a few different shots, but this one of my favorites.
( Shot with 50mm, f1.8, 1/100, 400 ISO )

Jewelry & additional details: Morgan was going to wear her mother’s pearl necklace so I wanted to get a special photograph of it. I happened to see a couple of old mannequins in one room so I grabbed a mannequin and placed the necklace on it. Morgan also had a second dress for the departure so I put that on the mannequin and shot this photograph.
( Shot with 50mm, f1.8, 1/250, 100 ISO )

Please let me know if this helped you in any way! I am planning on sharing more about my work process so let me know if there is something you would like to know about!
